I've recently had my braces removed (May 2009) and now have an Essix retainer for my bottom jaw (to wear at night) and an Hawley retainer for my top jaw with false tooth attached (to wear during the day).

Starting in Aug/Sept 2004 I had Damon type 2 brackets, then In-ovation brackets (replaced March and May 2006) and seven In-ovation brackets without clips (with elastic ligatures).
Total time in braces = 4 years and 8 months!

NB: All treatment is through the NHS apart from implant work done by Mr Ziff which is private.

Less chin, more cheeks?

I am finally 18 and have just finished college.

I am given the same options again.

Mr S tells me with the jaw operation my jaws will not be the only thing which will change; my facial appearance will change too.

I will have "less chin and more cheeks" as he put it.

I don't think my jaw has grown any bigger, maybe slightly but I can't tell.

I agree to the treatment as it's better than just keeping the teeth as they are now.

It's much better to have straight teeth then wonky ones!

Decisions, decisions...

My second visit to the orthodontics.

We had another chat and Mr S looked at my teeth again.

I am now 16. I was told that I had a number of options to straighten out my teeth and my underbite.

I have the option of having a major operation to shift the position of both of my jaws.

I was also told I can have braces to straighten my teeth and then a bridge or implant to replace my missing upper incisor. (I commented you can't see my top teeth anyway and Mr S told me you will be able to after my jaws have moved).

Or I can just keep the teeth as they are, which is a very crowded bottom jaw and a nicely spaced out upper jaw but with my upper central incisor missing.

I was informed that they need to wait until I am 18 so my jaw has stopped growing as Mr S told me my underbite will gradually get worse.

It Begins!

I got referred by my dentist to the Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry Department at Glenfield Hospital.

I wasn't aware of anything being wrong with my teeth before I got referred. As far as I was concerned my teeth were normal.

I have an underbite which isn't very noticeable but affects the position of my teeth.
---------------------------------------------------------

I had my first visit to the Orthodontics Clinic at Glenfield Hospital - Leicester today.

I am still attending secondary school and I'm 15 years old.

I had to be leave school early and went down with my Dad for my appointment.

I met my orthodontist Mr S for the first time.

He had a look at my teeth and made notes in his file.
He also looked at a mold/ impression of my teeth which my dentist had already made.

I told him about my missing adult upper central incisor which I lost when I was 8.
I have a very small gap where the tooth used to be.

NB: Photos of my impressions
